Two legendary creatures, two companion decks. Black Shuck is the ghostly black hound of East Anglian folklore, said to have burst into St. Mary's Church in Bungay, Suffolk, during a storm in August 1577. Mothman is the winged, red-eyed creature reported around Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1966 and 1967. Together they make up the A. Haines Cryptids collection.
The tuck boxes are printed inside and out on soft matte stock in a woodblock-print style, inspired by the broadsheets and pamphlets that first reported these sightings. Black Shuck is black with red; Mothman reverses the scheme to red with black. Each box is finished with a custom stamp sticker seal.
The two decks share the same hand-drawn two-way back pattern (black for Shuck, deep red for Mothman, each with its own creature details), with spades at 3 and 9 o'clock and cut triangles at 12 and 6 that look striking in a fan or spread. The courts are redrawn from an antique British one-way pattern into symmetrical two-way designs, with chunky antique pips, refined indices and warm vintage colours.
Each Ace of Spades features its cryptid, and the two Jokers in each deck form a diptych: place them side by side to reveal one large illustration of the creature.
